The Legend of Slawi City

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom in the district Tetegal (now named Tegal). In the kingdom there lived a King named Ki Gede Sebayu who had a daughter named Nini Dwijayanti. Nini was famous as a girl who was cantic, intelligent and agile. So it was natural that many young men wanted to marry her .
One day, Ki Gede Sebayu wanted to expand his kingdom area. So he mobilized dozens of people to cut down trees in the forest. But unfortunately, there was one teak tree that was very difficult to cut down by his troops. After almost a week no one could cut down the tree, the news finally came to the ears of the prabu. Ki Gede Sebayu finally decided to hold a competition. The essence of the competition was the prabu would provide a wealth gifts and would marry his daughter to the man who could cut down the tree. Turns Nini Jayanti did not expect wealth, beauty, and rank competition but magic competition. He said, "Anyone who can cut down and knock down the giant teak tree in the southern mountain will be my husband. Even though he is poor or no ranking , I will remain him lifetime".
Finally, it was decided that the contest would be held on Friday Kliwon after Friday prayers. The competition was attended by 25 young people from various regions. Most of them carry pethel (ax). In honor of their courage, Ki Gede made a tent (in that day called temple which means home) for each around the giant teak tree.  Ki Gede Sebayu opened the contest with a prayer and made it clear to all participants in order to appear with a noble soul. He said, "Anyone who fails please does not regret, while winning does not overbearing." Each participant was provided a full day to do their job. One by one of them showed their intention. Every afternoon a lot of people came to witness the collapse of the giant teak. However, over a dozen days the teak tree was still survive even if every participant was already exhausted even the next morning it was back like its origin. However, those who had failed were still persist in his tent wanted to see who would be the winner. On the last day, the atmosphere was increasingly tense. Ki Gede Sebayu was praying and Nini's face was pale thought about how her fate later.
In the late afternoon on the last day, there came a students who claimed to be Ki Jadug. He asked permission joining the competition and apologized for being late because he had just heard the news on the trip. Ki Gede Sebayu then said in a low tone "Okay. Please try it. May Allah bestow His miracles to you." Ki Jadug then asked permission for ablution and pray two rak. A short time later, they found Ki Jadug swung his ax with a great martial arts. When the fifth swing, there was a rumble of wind whirlwind and then the earth shook that made people running away from that place. At that moment a giant oak tree fell slowly without touching anyone around. People who were there cheering happily relentless. Ki Gede Sebayu told all the people who attended, "My fellow! Look! Fate of God set Ki Jadug become Nini Jayanti’s husband. The wedding ceremony will be held with Islamic law and appropriate customs.Watch also that the sacred oak tree which is belong to us, would become the main pole of the earth Tetegal later. watch also later when this place become prosperous, it will be named Candi Selawe. Now let's break up and  give thanks to Allah." Then, people dismissed with open heart. Ki Jadug apparently was a nobleman of Mataram who accidentally wandered to studied and preached. Once married to Nini Dwijayanti, then he used his real name, Prince Purbaya.
They lived happily and were known as esteemed figures in Tegal. Selawe temple name that means the home of twenty-five of the participants was long spoken “Selawe or Selawi or Slawi” like now.
